Drywall, also known as gypsum board or plasterboard, offers multiple advantages in residential and commercial construction projects. That is why at Parceros Construction LLC, we have specialized in drywall repair, installation, and finishing, providing our clients with a value-added solution, including versatility, ease of installation, high-quality finish, sound insulation, fire resistance, durability, and sustainability.
These advantages make drywall a viable and common choice in the construction of homes, offices, commercial spaces, and other interior areas in Iowa and throughout the United States, making it an attractive option for both builders and homeowners.
In addition to being used for structural construction, drywall is also used for architectural elements, cladding, partitions, false ceilings, thermal insulation, soundproofing, and furniture making, among other applications.
Taking into account its multiple advantages, the expert drywall team at Parceros Construction LLC has put together a short step-by-step guide for a successful drywall installation for those who want to familiarize themselves with the process, whether they need to hire an expert drywall company and want to understand the scope of the work required or simply want to undertake a DIY installation at home.
Here is a guide for a successful drywall installation:
Step 1: Preparing the installation area
Before starting the installation, ensure that the area is clean and free of objects that may hinder the work. Remove any obstructions, furniture, or previous wall coverings. Then, inspect the walls and ceiling to ensure they are in suitable condition for installation.
Step 2: Choosing the right materials
Select the appropriate type of drywall for your project. We recommend considering factors such as moisture resistance, fire resistance, and acoustic characteristics, based on the specific needs of the installation area. Ensure that you acquire drywall panels of the appropriate quality and thickness for a solid and durable installation.
Step 3: Accurate measurement and cutting of drywall
Take precise measurements of the installation area, using a metal ruler and level to obtain accurate measurements and ensure that the walls and ceiling are level. Then, mark the measurements on the drywall panels, including edges, outlets, and switches, and proceed with the necessary cuts using a drywall saw. Ensure clean and precise cuts for a perfect fit.
Step 4: Installing the drywall panels onto the framing
At Parceros Construction LLC, we recommend starting by installing the drywall panels in the corners of the walls, ensuring they are level and properly aligned. Use special drywall nails or screws to secure the panels in place. Place the nails or screws at an approximate distance of 16 inches apart and in the appropriate support points to ensure a secure attachment.
Step 5: Proper reinforcement
In areas where additional reinforcement is required, such as around doors, windows, or corners, use metal corner beads or drywall adhesive tape. These elements will help strengthen and stabilize the installation, providing a solid foundation for the final finish. To achieve precise and high-quality finishing, there are multiple types of corner beads available in the market that will also help your drywall last over time. For example, there are metal corner beads, which are the most commonly used, made from galvanized steel and resistant to oxidation. Likewise, you can use vinyl corner beads, which are made of plastic and are more flexible than metal ones, making them less likely to deform during transportation. It all depends on the type of finish your project requires.
Step 6: Final finishing
Once the drywall panels are installed, it's time to carry out the final finishing. There are several steps that we will briefly mention in this article and are crucial for ensuring a clean and high-quality finish:
Stir the joint compound and prepare the surface, removing any loose or broken paper from the drywall panels to prevent them from ending up in the compound.
Use a 5" putty knife to cover the joints and screw heads with joint compound.
After applying the compound evenly, place paper tape over the compound applied in the previous step and use the putty knife again to press the tape firmly against the compound until it's completely smooth, removing any excess joint compound.
Once the compound is completely dry, sand the first layer of joint compound applied using medium-grit sandpaper, being careful not to sand the tape, until you smooth out any rough areas.
For the second and third coats, use a 10" putty knife to apply more compound over all joints and screw heads, allowing enough time for it to dry before sanding with fine-grit sandpaper.
Finally, clean all surfaces with a damp cloth to prepare them for priming.
By following these steps, you will achieve a long-lasting drywall installation. Remember, to obtain a quality finish, it's essential to thoroughly understand the process and practice it as many times as needed until you master this technique. If you lack experience in drywall installation, the primary recommendation is to hire an expert company to ensure an impeccable result.
